Rio Sumpul is a river located in the department of Chalatenango, El Salvador. It is approximately 45 kilometers long and serves as a natural border between El Salvador and Honduras. The river flows from the mountain range of El Pital, the highest point in El Salvador, and is fed by several tributaries in the region. The river is known for its crystal clear waters and its importance as a source of irrigation for nearby farmlands. In addition, Rio Sumpul has become a popular destination for tourists because of its scenic beauty and also because it offers a range of outdoor activities such as kayaking and rafting. Despite its beauty, the river has a complicated history as it was the site of a violent conflict between El Salvador and Honduras in 1969, known as the Football War, over a soccer game dispute that escalated into a military conflict.
